This month, we’re celebrating Anita Jones, a dedicated and passionate Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) specialist from Eau Claire High School. Now in her fourth year as a JMG specialist, Anita has made a lasting impact on the youth she serves, drawing on her unique background in finance and education to guide students toward successful futures.
With degrees in finance and business, Anita initially pursued a career in the financial industry. However, as the field became more focused on meeting quotas rather than building personal connections, she realized her true passion was helping young people navigate their futures. She transitioned into teaching, instructing personal finance and geometry at Eau Claire High School. When the opportunity to become a JMG specialist arose, Anita saw it as the perfect way to merge her expertise in finance with her love for education.
What motivates Anita most in her role is watching her students grow, gain confidence, and make decisions about their future. Teaching both 9th and 12th graders, she has the privilege of witnessing their development over the years. “By May, everything we’ve talked about—career exploration, guest speakers, field trips—it all comes together,” she shares. “Seeing students take that next step is an incredible feeling. I’m always proud—not of what I’ve done, but of what I’ve seen them develop. It’s amazing to watch their growth and witness their achievements.”
One of Anita’s most memorable moments as a specialist happened during a career fair at Andrews University. A student, originally set on becoming a veterinarian, tried a flight simulation booth on a whim and excelled at it, impressing students already on their way to becoming pilots. “That moment changed everything for him,” Anita recalls. “He started researching pilot training, reached out to professionals, and even decorated his graduation cap with a miniature airplane. Now, he’s actively working toward becoming a pilot, and I still check in on him regularly.”
For Anita, JMG is crucial because it helps students see their value and recognize the opportunities available to them. “Many young people don’t see where they fit in or understand why education matters,” she explains. “But when a carpenter visits the classroom and explains the math behind measuring a room for carpet, it clicks for them. They start to see how knowledge applies to real life.”
Outside of her work, Anita enjoys spending time with her family and staying involved in her community. She is passionate about helping young people find their path—whether that’s college, skilled trades, or entering the workforce. “It’s not just about getting a job,” she says. “It’s about helping students realize their potential and giving them the tools to achieve their dreams.”
