In celebration of Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, we’re proud to highlight Brayden Burnett, whose journey exemplifies the powerful impact of CTE programs. Through CTE, students like Brayden gain the hands-on skills, credentials, and confidence needed to succeed in the workforce and pursue rewarding careers in high-demand fields.
Brayden applied to the Marquette-Alger Technical Middle College (MATMC), a Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG) program, which allowed him to expand his hands-on learning experience and enroll in Welding Technology college courses. As a first-generation college student, Brayden faced the additional challenges of navigating the unfamiliar territory of the college environment. With the mentorship, support, and resources offered by JMG at MATMC, Brayden was able to make the most of his high school experience; this guidance helped him identify his interests, set meaningful career goals, embrace opportunities for academic and personal growth, and overcome learning challenges that had previously held him back.
As part of this transformative experience, Brayden successfully completed a CTE program in welding, brazing, and soldering, gained valuable hands-on experience through relevant high school employment, and earned an industry-recognized welding credential. He also actively engaged in community service, giving back to the community and increasing his sense of purpose.Â
With the support of JMG and his own dedication, Brayden graduated from college and secured a fulfilling full-time welding position, earning a commendable $30 per hour. "From the start, Brayden’s grit and determination stood out," said Haley Rhoades, JMG specialist from MATMC. "As he navigated his post-secondary journey, we were proud to support him in building the skills and confidence needed to step into his dream career as a welder." This achievement not only marked a significant step towards financial independence but also solidified his career in a field he’s passionate about.
Brayden’s journey is a testament to the powerful impact of mentorship and support, exemplifying how JMG empowers young people to overcome adversity and achieve their goals. Now thriving as a welder, Brayden’s determination and hard work inspire those around him as he continues to contribute to his community and industry.
